A self-described “Taurus woman,” Powell is unafraid to use her bullhorn for lyrical activism backed by a crystalline-sharp Telecaster guitar. The songwriter often promotes a progressive attitude in song that at times comes across a tad too twee, but the good fight for human rights is forever in vogue. As she takes aim at society’s woes, evoking a pastel 1960s vibrancy, Powell loads her barrel with flowers for the ultimate show of power.
Dare you to find a catchier tune on Noise Pop’s Spotify playlist than “If You Want.” The Reptaliens’ lazy-day rock is reminiscent of their like-minded Portland predecessors Unknown Mortal Orchestra, with just a dash of Stereolab in the vocals. Catch them at the UC Theatre in Berkeley opening for trending Portland indie rockers Strfkr.
Garage rock is baked into the DNA of the Bay Area’s music scene, and Fake Fruit is the new spiritual standard-bearer, harnessing the chunky guitars and cheeky side smirk of however-you-spell-The-Oh-Sees-these days, but with a millennial self-awareness and slower swagger that puts the band in a category of its own. If there’s a local band poised to break out nationally in 2023, this is it. Devo-inspired"spank-rock" band Juicebumps opens.
