Jersey City police received a 9-1-1 call at 4:20 a.m. with the caller saying “a friend was shot,” according to police radio transmissions.
The prosecutor’s office declined to give any details on the shooting. According to police radio transmissions, three people dragged Smith out of the building and waited for police to arrive. Smith, who was shot in the abdomen, was then rushed to the Jersey City Medical Center.
Police responding to Wilkinson Avenue between Martin Luther King Drive and Ocean Avenue located Smith with an apparent gunshot wound. Smith was pronounced dead at approximately 4:55 a.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the state Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, Suarez said.
