John Heathco, 41, and Abby Lutz, 28, died from “intoxication by substance to be determined,” authorities in Mexico said.

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico — A man and woman from Newport Beach have been found dead in their luxury hotel room in Baja California Sur, according to police and news reports.

Their cause of death was “intoxication by substance to be determined,” the AG’s office said in a statement on Wednesday. “We are closely monitoring local authorities’ investigation into the cause of death,” the statement said. “We stand ready to provide all appropriate consular assistance. Out of respect for the privacy of the families, we have nothing further to add at this time.”
