Mealtimes can look very different when tackling menopausal symptoms

Besides the odd joke about avoiding middle-age spread, the impact diet can have on our bodies during the menopause is rarely discussed. But what we choose to eat can really affect how we feel.

. Here, two menopausal women reveal how dietary changes during this time has improved their heart health.‘It was during a Well Woman check that I discovered my cholesterol was worryingly high. I’d been struggling to find the time and motivation to live a healthy lifestyle due to juggling work and family commitments and was feeling despondent about my weight. I was also dealing with low-level anxiety, mood swings, poor sleep, itchy skin and memory loss – all side effects of my yo-yoing hormones.

‘Another food I enjoyed incorporating into my daily routine was fortified soya alternatives to milk and yogurt, which are low in saturated fat and provide calcium to support my bone health. The fortified soya drink was great in my smoothies and the strawberry alternative to yogurt was a tasty treat. The overall theme is colour, flavour and diversity – but simplicity, too.

‘Managing menopausal symptoms is a struggle at times, but I have noticed my skin and nails look better and my self-worth has come back. I’ve done so many diets over the years but this is one I feel I’ll be able to stay on track with.
