This Research Opportunity will be filled depending on the availability of funds. All application materials must be submitted through USAJobs by 11:59 pm, US Eastern Standard Time, on the closing date.The U.S. Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center detects, locates, and characterizes tens of thousands of earthquakes globally each year with a large emphasis placed on both the timeliness and accuracy of event characterization.
The focus of this Mendenhall Research Opportunity is to develop a scientific framework leveraging machine learning that will ultimately provide the rapid and more complete characterization of earthquake properties. This work can be targeted at improving the NEIC’s ability to detect and associate seismic signals, or at estimating other seismic characteristics .
In addition to the core development of machine-learning-based algorithms, research should apply these technologies to aid our understanding of earthquake processes. Research may include studies aimed at improving the characterization of specific earthquake sequences or event types and subsequent analysis of the scientific implications of these results.
