The online sale is the first to focus on the state’s top wines in more than two decades
Collectible wines from California are the sole focus of a Christie’s Los Angeles-based online auction that begins Friday and includes a trove of the Napa Valley cult classic Screaming Eagle.
These are not inexpensive wines: Three bottles of Screaming Eagle 2007—with a 100-point score from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate—together are estimated to fetch between US$8,000 and US$14,000. “We have collectors who are both consignors and buyers in that part of the world and elsewhere—not just in California—and so it was just a natural step for us once we went back into selling in Los Angeles,” he says.
The two anonymous collectors who are offering several bottles for the Christie’s auction are longtime collectors of fine wine with vast cellars. “Screaming Eagle and the rare Californians are just part of their collecting profile,” Munro says, noting that they chose to sell bottles they thought would do well in a California-focused auction.
