The automaker notes that while an inflator explosion could send sharp metal fragments into the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death, it says that the airbag inflators involved in this recall do not pose an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety to drivers of affected vehicles.
However, it acknowledges that over a longer period of degradation, the airbag may not perform properly in the event of a crash.Both dealers and owners will be notified of the recall on or before February 17. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to their local dealer where the driver frontal airbag will be replaced at no cost.
