The 2022 RamTrucks 1500 TRX earned its keep:
The TRX's gung-ho charm did wear thin at times, though. Its exhaust rumble—which increased from 79 to 82 decibels at full throttle during our test—reverberates through nearby structures and can be droning at speed, prompting some drivers to wish for an active system with a quiet mode. Others were put off by its ride, which is stiff for a desert runner, but the firm setup lends the TRX more composure on back roads than you'd expect.
Additional frustrations included noises from the TRX's suspension, which the dealer alleviated by tightening the mountings for the front anti-roll bar links and the rear Panhard rod. But clunks from the drivetrain at stop-and-go speeds and when shifting between drive and reverse persisted throughout our test. Reports from other TRX owners indicate this is a known problem, but multiple dealers found nothing wrong with our rig.
The TRX ultimately left some of us feeling content that our test was only a short-term fling and not a committed marriage. Versatile as this truck may be, sensible it is not. And yet the effectiveness with which it blurs the line between work and play won many of our hearts. "The TRX's alpha attitude is undeniably intoxicating," noted senior associate editor Eric Stafford. "But I doubt anything like it will be offered in 10 years." Sadly, he's probably right.
