It's time for our annual awards season again, and here's every non-finalist contender that vied to take home our 2024 SUVOTY award.
we use to award the Golden Calipers: safety, engineering excellence, advancement in design, value, efficiency, and performance of intended function. This year, we faced weather challenges before we even got started—in the form of California's"Hurriquake"—but we rallied and regrouped out in the Mojave Desert once again, where we put a diverse field of 40 all-new or significantly revised SUV models and variants to the test.
Consistency in that new design would help. The regular models are decidedly attractive, but we don't love the sportier-looking N Line trim's wild proportions and in-your-face styling. As a model intended to ease Lexus loyalists into electric driving, the RZ450e doesn't lean into idiosyncrasy. That's laudable in some ways, troubling in others. Its exterior mixes familiar details with new approaches. One example: A filled-in version of the spindle grille creates brand association while indicating its EV-ness, even as its slim taillight bar and spoiler spikes give off a"robo-warrior helmet" vibe.
