Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday just a year ago, but many Northeast Ohio towns and organizations already have established their own events and celebrations to mark the day.
To kick off the weekend of Juneteenth, the front lawn of the Perkins Stone Mansion in Akron will host a Juneteenth edition of its Farm Fridays event series. Students in preschool through first grade, and second through sixth grade, can learn more about the holiday through “outreach discovery trunks,” provided through the Summit County Historical Society.
Finally, on Juneteenth itself, take a morning history hike to the John Brown Monument to learn more about the Northeast Ohio abolitionist that is its namesake.John Brown Monument: enter at Akron Zoo for a hike, 500 Edgewood Ave., Akron“Birth of a New Legacy: Juneteenth Celebration of Art” at Artful Cleveland
