A federal court recently ruled that states must cover sex-change procedures for their employees.

The case in question, Lange v. Houston County, surrounded an employee of the county sheriff’s office in her attempts to secure healthcare coverage from her employer’s plan for a sex-change surgery. Coverage was denied, leading Anna Lange to sue for Title VII violations., the attorneys general argued the court misinterpreted Title VII and created “chaos” for employers by “drastically” expanding the act’s liability.
In explaining their request for a rehearing, the states claimed the court’s decision would inflict “severe” consequences on the public with a ruling providing a new interpretation of Title VII.
