Dee Rees’ feature film debut, developed through the directors’ lab of the Sundance Institute, tells the story of a Brooklyn girl, Lee, coming to terms with her sexuality in the face of an unsupportive mother. At the 2011 Sundance it took home the award for excellence in cinematography. “I had programmed the short film ofwhen I was at Outfest,” says Yutani. “I had met Dee Rees, and just knew that she was a special filmmaker.
