An avalanche buried a road on the Whittier side of the tunnel connecting the town to the rest of Southcentral Alaska Thursday morning.

Crews with the Department of Transportation and Public Facilities confirmed that West Camp Road was cleared by 12:55 p.m. and traffic would soon be moving through the tunnel again. The City of Whittier firstAlaska State Troopers reported there was no damage from the slide. The city also said crews did mitigation work to prevent additional slides from happening in the immediate future. Avalanche conditions around Portage wereA spokesperson with DOT said the avalanche was first reported at 9:12 a.m. Thursday, leading to the tunnel closure.
