UPDATE: More has been learned about an early Sunday morning apartment fire Inwood. The FDNY said it was started by a lithium-ion battery. KristieKNews reports.
One of the rescues had to be made with an aerial ladder at around 1:30 a.m. from a fifth-floor apartment. Three children, ages 1, 8, and 15, along with an adult, were taken to Harlem hospital.
The family was trapped. Their only escape path blocked by the burning battery. Esposito said two people managed to escape, and locked the door behind them, and fire crews had to force it open."The fire woke up one of the occupants, who was able to wake up everybody else. Smoke detectors are gonna sound the alarm when people are sleeping," Esposito said.
The FDNY is working on a plan to hopefully prevent more of these types of fires, which keep happening across the city.
