Ananda Fuara first opened in 1982 and was named and inspired by spiritual leader Sri Chinmoy. As one of the oldest vegetarian restaurants in, it gained a following for dishes like the “neatloaf” sandwich, made with grains, eggs, ricotta cheese, tofu and spices and finished with a tomato sauce. The restaurant also serves brunch, with dishes like a wild mushroom benedict and huevos rancheros topped with soy-based meat upon request.

Ironically, the person who picked up the phone said that while the restaurant is closing because of how slow the neighborhood has been, it was currently slammed. Fans of the restaurant were showing up en masse to pay their final respects before its closure on Sunday.
