The 49ers’ star-laden roster can make another championship run with or without major activity in free agency.
As Mike McGlinchey makes his foray into free agency, he does so with mixed emotions, and that likely goes for any of the 49ers’ free agents.
The 2019 season saw the 49ers surprisingly step forth again as contenders, and they’ve reached the NFC Championship Game in three of the past four seasons, albeit advancing just once toward a Super Bowl defeat in February 2020.So “contender” status may not be enough to woo some, whether they’re aging mercenaries or, in McGlinchey’s case, first-time free agents seeking generational wealth.
“We have a team that’s ready to go now,” Lynch said at last month’s NFL Scouting Combine, when noting that Trey Lance needs to get healthy and play for this NFC contender, all the while Brock Purdy recovers from elbow surgery that is slated for Friday. “… It’s definitely a tough deal,” McGlinchey added. “We have a lot of great players in the 49ers organization which is why we’ve been so good the last five years. It makes it really hard to afford everybody.”
Reinforcements can still come forth in the coming months. That goes for next month’s draft, where Lynch, assistant general manager Adam Peters and all personnel staff and scouts must repeat their knack for finding late-round gems, since their 11 picks don’t begin until No. 99 overall.
