For McCaffrey, the Panthers are getting second, third and fourth round picks in the upcoming draft, and a 2025 fifth-rounder,Over the weekend, it was reported that the Panthers, enduring another miserable year, were listening to offers on their star running back, but their asking price was two first-round picks. That would have appeared to ruled out the Niners, who don't have a pick in the first round of this year's draft.
Now San Francisco doesn't have a pick in the first four rounds of next years draft, although they could get a compensatory pick if defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans gets a head coaching job in the offseason. Blowing up nearly an entire draft for a running back — especially one with McCaffrey's injury history — is a bold move, but it's easy to see the temptation. When healthy, McCaffrey is one of the most versatile weapons in the league. In 2019, his last fully healthy season, he racked up 19 total touchdowns and nearly 2,400 yards from scrimmage, with the stunning feat of crossing 1000 yards both rushing and receiving in the same year.
McCaffrey only played 10 total games in 2020-21, suffering a serious ankle injury in 2020 and then hurting his thigh, hamstring and shoulder last year. He's been healthy so far in 2022, averaging about 20 touches a game as a receiver and runner. His local ties run deep. McCaffrey starred at Stanford from 2014-16, and his family is famously close with Shanahan's. McCaffrey once said that the 49ers coach babysat him in the 1990s, when Kyle's father, Mike, was coaching the Broncos and Christian's father, Ed, was playing for them.
