The final day of early voting on Friday saw the highest single-day turnout in the two-week window.
Almost 6 million people — about 38 percent of the electorate — had voted during the same period in 2018, the first midterm after former President Donald Trump took office. Democrats made surprising gains throughout the state that year, picking up 12 seats in the Texas House and puttingWith O’Rourke at the top of the ticket again, this time to challenge Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, political experts on both sides of the aisle predicted that final turnout would top 10 million voters.
But current trends indicate that won’t be the case, barring a rush to the polls on Election Day.
This year, the total is a little more than 250,000, or about 1.8 percent of registered voters in the top 30 counties. Roughly 40 percent of people who have voted so far have previously cast a ballot in a Republican primary, compared with 29 percent who have Democratic primary history. Another 30 percent have no voting history or have only voted in general elections, according to an initial early voting report by Derek Ryan, a GOP political consultant and data analyst.
On Friday, the final day of early voting, more than 710,000 people voted in person — the highest single-day turnout in the two-week window.
