Who we could see take on the role in the Marvel movie's sequel:
– She’s the star of Grown-ish, the Black-ish spin-off, and has the comedic chops to move into the role of Shuri, who was without question the funniest part of the original Black Panther movie. – If you haven’t seen The Hate U Give, you need to immediately, but besides that, there’s already a connection in place here. Stenberg actually auditioned for the role of Shuri before Wright was cast, but dropped out of the process because as a biracial actress she felt she was too light-skinned for the part. That’s absolutely her call, but if we’re talking about pure onscreen talent that could work well in the role, it’s still hard not think of Stenberg immediately.
– Her most prominent role to date has been a years-spanning part on Greenleaf, the mystery drama on the Oprah Winfrey Network. You may not have heard of her yet, but she’s a rising star and could break out the way Wright did if given the role of Shuri in a recasting. It’s also important to note that while all of the actresses here are in American productions, many countries in Africa itself have their own fast-growing movie scenes, and there are countless more talented actresses there that could be right for the part as well, so the search should expand beyond the borders of the US if possible.
What will happen with Letitia Wright is unclear, but if Disney and the filmmakers tire of Wright coming into conflict with vaccine regulations, a new Shuri does not seem like an impossible thought in the future. We’ll have to see.
