A new, affordable finger-prick diagnostic test developed by Washington State University researcher John Alderete could help combat the prevalent but underdiagnosed sexually transmitted infection, Trichomonas vaginalis. The test delivers results in just five minutes and costs under $20. Trich is easi
ly curable with metronidazole but is often only diagnosed when symptoms are present. Current diagnostic methods have limitations, including the need for specialized equipment and trained personnel. Alderete’s test requires only a drop of blood to detect a specific antibody unique to Trich, making it more accessible and user-friendly.
“We know a lot about the biology of this organism,” said Alderete, the study lead author and professor in WSU’s School of Molecular Biosciences. “There probably will never be a vaccine for trich simply because the organism is well equipped to evade our immune responses. But I’d argue we don’t need a vaccine. We just need to diagnose people, and once diagnosed, they can be cured.”
As detailed in this study, the new test requires only a drop of blood to detect an antibody specific to trich.
