Leave it to the Type A marketers at Ram to describe a feature which has been around for over 25 years in a creative yet entirely appropriate manner. Rather than show off a truck with four forward-swinging doors, a feature of crew cab trucks since the Clinton era, Ram decided to flip the script by installing front and rear doors which both open from the cab’s centre. You’ll recognize these from a generation of extended cab trucks whose portals opened in precisely the same manner.
And they called them Grand Saloon Style doors. It’s a brilliant name which recalls taverns from the old west and images of surly cowpokes barging into the local roadhouse, doors swinging and guns blazing. In the real world, these portals open up a world of accessibility to the cab — a space which, we hasten to add, has a set of jump seats behind the rear bench. This means this all-electric Ram is actually a three-row rig, a trait which is devastatingly popular on the SUV side of the house.
While little detail was given about the new RamBox, animated footage provided by Ram show the entire box side lifting skyward to reveal an enormous cargo area complete with shelving and partitioned compartments. You can bet there’s a couple of electrical outlets in there as well. Looks good to our jaundiced eyes.
An adjustable and removable lower infotainment display can be taken out and deployed as a tablet, passenger display, truck bed workstation, vehicle control, or video game controller. When the 14.2-inch tablet is placed back in its home base, it can pair with the other permanently mounted 14.2-inch screen to create a large viewing area.
