A study of people in the US suggests those at high genetic risk of dementia are less likely to develop the condition if they improve their lives in seven ways
People with a high genetic risk for dementia can reduce the likelihood of developing the disorder by living a healthier lifestyle, a study in the US suggests.at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland and her colleagues used data from more than 11,000 people in the US collected between 1987 to 2019. The participants had an average age of 54 at the start of the study and were followed, on average, for 26 years.
In this study, the researchers wanted to see if this was still true for those who are most at risk of developing dementia due to their genetics. The team used genome-wide association studies to assess each person’s genetic risk for developing dementia, and then used the information to split the participants into groups based on how high their risk was. Those in the highest risk group were 1.5 to 2.7 times as likely to develop the disease as those in the lowest risk group.
They also saw similar results for people of primarily African descent, but due to the smaller sample size the researchers can’t be as certain about their conclusions, says Tin. Overall, people of primarily African descent who scored between 9 and 14 in the lifestyle assessment had a 17 per cent lower risk of dementia than those who scored between 0 and 6, the team found.
