Across the country, traditionally Democratic households have been riven by the 2020 campaign race. Here, a mother and son try to cross their political divide.

: In order to talk about Bernie, I first need to talk about 2016. In 2016 we were a hard-core Hillary household; that was all I knew. I hadn’t followed the primaries, and I certainly didn’t know anything about Bernie other than that he was the guy that had the. During the general election, like many others, I watched the Trump campaign stumble through scandal after scandal, reassured by a firm belief that Hillary would win.

MJF: Early on in the Democratic primary I tried not to get attached. I write about politics pretty regularly, and even though I’m on the opinion side I felt like it was best to stay out of the primary. I did have a dinner forMG: I was sure that my parents were morons who would do anything ifMJF: I think it’s annoying when the people on your favorite Bernie-esque podcast make fun of me.MJF: I do think Max had really thought through what he didn’t agree with in the Democratic party.

MG: The pundits are right: Bernie is angry, his supporters are angry, and you should be too. I can’t imagine looking down, realizing our lifestyle is built on a mountain of corpses that grows each day, and being anything other than furious.

MG: The Bernie camp wants you to “fight for someone you don’t know” and Bernie’s willingness to do just that is why I support him. Every other candidate has tried to assure us that they are working for our best interests, only Bernie wants us to go and fight for them ourselves. That’s why he makes me most confident we can actually make things better. For the first time in my entire life, I actually believe that if enough people join hands and work together, we could move mountains.
