A bit of Houston history is crashing in a parking lot, for now

This day in Houston history, Nov. 15, 1923: An alligator on the loose in First Ward

The Cohn House’s hop-scotching block-by-block around the east edge of the central business district is a sign of Houston’s progress and lack thereof. It spent a century at 1711 Rusk before sprucing up Avenidas de las Americas took precedence and displaced it up the block to Texas Avenue in 2010. For more than a decade, it sat – conspicuously – next to Home Plate Bar & Grill across the street from Minute Maid Park.

Remnants of downtown's once stylish residential community, the Arthur Cohn house was one of two Victorian houses moved to make way for street expansion near the George R. Brown Convention Center and Minute Maid Park, seen Oct. 16, 2003. The house has since been moved a second time.. Then the plan, outlined two years ago, is to move it to Marron Park along Buffalo Bayou at Hirsch Road, less than two miles from where the house sits today.

Benton said Houston First, the nonprofit created by the city to manage the George R. Brown Convention Center and other city-maintained sites, "provides surveillance" for the Cohn House.
