'We think my dad might be the oldest person to survive a coronavirus infection, at least in this country,' Charlie Campbell said.

KIRKLAND, WASHINGTON — Charlie Campbell bent to the window at the nursing home and waved to his father, quarantined inside.First, the elder Campbell had suffered a stroke.

A stroke hit Eugene Campbell on Feb. 11, and he was transferred to Life Care on Feb. 21 for recovery. Charlie Campbell and his brother, Todd Campbell, had been planning to visit their dad at the facility already, but on Feb. 29 someone from Life Care told them the facility had been locked down over some of the first COVID-19 cases in the United States.

"One of the mistakes we made is that instead of getting away from the virus, we gravitated toward it. I'm a perfect example of that," Charlie Campbell said. COVID-19. Probably a death sentence, based on what doctors in China, and increasingly in Italy, were seeing. "It was pretty quickly we realized, 'Hey, maybe he's going to beat this,'" Charlie Campbell said."The doctors said that under normal circumstances, they would discharge my dad. But, of course, these are not normal circumstances."
