The earth shook at 9:29 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
With millions of Californians planning to practice their “drop, cover, and hold on” routines Thursday morning as part of a statewide earthquake drill, residents throughout the Bay Area and the Sacramento River delta on Wednesday received an unexpected — and rattling — sense of the real thing.
David Kent, an Isleton city councilman, said he felt a “sustained jolt” while working from his computer at home. Still, nothing fell from the walls or bookshelves of his house, and he did not receive any reports of major damage elsewhere in the town.Initial emergency notifications sent to mobile phones throughout Northern California warned of a far more severe quake — one measuring at a magnitude of 5.7 — 31 times stronger than the actual quake that struck near Isleton.
The system appears to have quickly corrected itself: The magnitude 5.7 reading was collected five seconds after the quake began. Less than two seconds later, the system downgraded its reading to a magnitude of 5.5. And nine seconds after the quake struck, the system read a magnitude of 4.9.
