A heart transplant helped a 4-year-old boy return home after 281 days at Texas Children's Hospital

Oliver Blankenship, 4, shows how he can ride his bike one-handed as he rides with his brother, Elliot, 9, at Colonial Park on May 13, 2023, in Houston. Oliver was born with a heart defect and underwent three corrective surgeries before going into heart failure. He then received a heart transplant at Texas Children’s Hospital.“When these babies are born, only one pump is in charge of everything, which is very ineffective,” Adachi said. “The heart has to work really, really hard.

“I didn’t want my baby to die,” Leslie Blankenship said. “We knew it would be a long, hard road. We just didn’t know it would be this hard.”The Blankenships, who live in Arkansas, knew there was a chance Oliver would be born with a heart defect. His brother, Elliot, has a, an abnormality where the aortic valve has two flaps instead of three. Elliot has regular check-ups but is otherwise healthy.

There were, however, other complications beyond the surgeries. When Oliver was 6 weeks old, he needed another procedure to sew his diaphragm to his chest wall because it had become paralyzed. When he was 6 months old, he needed surgery to patch a hole in his small intestine that happened when doctors inserted a feeding tube.

The surgery was a success, but three days later, doctors discovered a massive blood clot in Oliver’s left coronary artery. Adachi said it was a myocardial infarction — also known as a heart attack.
