Bob Dylan’s Irving concert doesn’t disappoint his biggest fan, Mike Rhyner

Rhyner, 71, who retired from a long radio career in 2020, became a Dylan fan when he first heard him sing“I just really liked him,” he said. “I liked the lyrics and the stories he told. And his songs were about five minutes long. At that time, on top-40 radio, you couldn’t do that. But they let him do that.”

“I’d never seen a band more on its toes ... because you never knew where was going to take a song,” he said.At the Irving show, Rhyner said that, as far as he could tell, Dylan stuck to the script. He performed a 16-song playlist and broke out his usual harmonica solo. As a piano faced the crowd, Dylan, clad in black, started the show with “Watching The River Flow.” He even threw in “Key West ” material.

“The thing about him, for me, is I come in with no expectations whatsoever,” Rhyner said. “If he wants to do what he wants to do, I’ll be OK with that. Whatever it is, that’s what he wanted to be that night.”story headlined “1986: The year that was.” Rhyner wrote that he overheard a concert-goer who couldn’t have been more than 16 leaving Reunion after the Dylan concert comment.
