A chance encounter at a Cleveland Heights garden turns into a summer fling with mountain mint.
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Love at first sight can happen with plants, and for me it almost always involves silvery gray foliage . During a Cleveland Heights garden tour last summer, I turned a corner, and there among lush green ferns and shrubs, tall and slender stalks towered gently above, topped with ethereal, silver leafy petals called bracts. In the July heat, their subtle and cool color shimmered and mesmerized, appearing almost as if they had their own source of light.
While not a true mint like spearmint and peppermint, short-toothed mountain mint does smell minty when crushed. This gives the plant another endearing trait in my heart: deer avoid them because they avoid most plants with strong scents.also has the minty habit of spreading by rhizomes underground, although they are not as aggressive as true mints.
