It was on July 8, 1776, four days after its issuance, that the declaration was read publicly for the first time outside of Philadelphia, in Trenton in front of what was then the Hunterdon County Courthouse. As boundary lines were later changed, Trenton now exists in Mercer County. “Since 1776, we as a community have allowed Important buildings, entire neighborhoods and even vistas, like the river, to be lost.”
