The drug has already been successfully tested in animal studies.A novel hormone combination has been created by a research team from Helmholtz Munich, the German Center for Diabetes Research , and Novo Nordisk for the potential treatment of type 2 diabetes in the future. The researchers combined the blood sugar-lowering actions of the medications tesaglitazar and GLP-1 to create a new and extremely effective drug.

The new drug candidate enhanced improvements of body weight, food intake, and glucose metabolism relative to the GLP-1 or tesaglitazar alone in obese male mice. Credit: Helmholtz Munich “This trick enabled us to combine the blood sugar-reducing effects of GLP-1 and tesaglitazar into a single highly effective molecule while keeping tesaglitazar away from tissues that it could damage,” explains PD Dr. Timo Müller, corresponding author, director of the Institute of Diabetes and Obesity, and scientist at DZD.

“This drug has great potential for the acute treatment of elevated blood sugar levels associated with type 2 diabetes,” says Aaron Novikoff, another lead author of the study.
