The autofictional novel “Bad Girls” follows a young woman named Camila as she finds a community of trans sex workers, with whom she shares daily doses of cruelty, pain, and humiliation—but also solidarity and joy.
. But Sosa Villada is not looking for ideological sympathy. In fact, the first defiant message in the English translation of her book is an author’s note addressed not to trans people’s perceived enemies but to their allies.
As a means of survival, Sosa Villada clung to writing—she posted an anonymous blog about her life—and attended the National University. She got a B.A. in theatre, and began a career as a stage, film, and TV actress, gaining a cult following in the underground-theatre scene. The first play she starred in, “Carnes Tolendas” , also based on her life, and fused with the poetry of Federico García Lorca, premièred in 2009 to wide critical acclaim.
“Argentina is at the forefront of progressive trans-rights legislation in the world, because it understands them as the right to identity,” Cabral Grinspan told me. This is a result, he said, of the trans movement’s connections with the country’s human-rights movement, which was born in the late nineteen-seventies out of the struggle against the atrocities committed by the military dictatorship.
