[+]In the midst of three days of discussion about markets and wealth management, an assembly of the nation’s elite financial advisors from firms such as Morgan Stanley, Merrill Lynch and Wells Fargo who were in attendance at Forbes/SHOOK annual Top Advisor Summit in Las Vegas, broke a charitable giving record, raising $1.4 million in a matter of hours for Make-A-Wish.
The effort was spearheaded by high school junior Jamie-Brooke Shook, daughter of Shook Research Founder R.J. Shook and chief operating officer Liz Shook. “I wanted to make a difference and help other kids,” the 17-year-old from Boca Raton, Florida said. During the event, founder R.J. Shook urged the 1,000 wealth managers in attendance, representing more than $1 trillion in assets under management, to “help children find their smiles … find the spirit, the will, to fight.
In attendance at the Forbes/SHOOK event were three “Wish kids,” who are among those brave children that would see their wishes come true as a result of the record-breaking donation. Among those in attendance were Zoe, an 11-year old girl battling a rare neurological condition, Olivia, a 13-year-old girl battling Leukemia, and Angelica, a 12-year old who received a kidney transplant from her mother.
Zoe had previously lost use of her lower body and was even at risk of not being able to walk again. After an unlikely recovery she was able to meet her favorite celebrity and visit her favorite amusement park. Nine months after her wish was granted her disease went into remission. Olivia was in Las Vegas not only to show the advisors in attendance the amazing impact of their philanthropy, but also to fulfill her wish—seeing a show and meeting the performers.and Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey’sThe Forbes/SHOOK Summit was the fourth annual gathering of top financial advisors.
