ACTION 8 UPDATE: German grocer Aldi has completed its purchase of Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie.
Aldi says it plans to open 800 new stores nationwide in the next five years, at a cost of $9 billion. Action 8 News reported on the sale last year. Both companies are private and the terms of the deal were not disclosed. Some Winn-Dixie stores will be converted into Aldi locations, but we don’t yet know how many or where.
Both Winn-Dixie and Aldi have stores in our area. Southeastern Grocers operates around 400 stores under the Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s name and is based in Jacksonville, Florida.
