A man is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend as she was walking away, San Antonio police said, after she refused to reunite with him.

Paul Ayala, 41, was arrested Tuesday evening, accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury. San Antonio police said he shot his ex-girlfriend on March 2 when she refused to reconcile their relationship.A man is accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend while she was walking away from him, San Antonio police said, after she refused to get back together with him.

Paul Ayala, 41, is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon causing seriously bodily injury to someone he was dating. He was also charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He remains in jail with bail set at $125,000. On March 2, a woman told police she was walking home when Ayala drove up and asked her to get in the vehicle. She did, and Ayala told her that he wanted them to get back together, an affidavit supporting Ayala's arrest said.The woman, 47, declined to do so. She told investigators that Ayala showed her his gun and said he would shoot her if she refused to reconcile.

The woman got out of the vehicle and was walking toward her apartment when Ayala fired a single shot, police said. Investigators said the bullet went into her back and exited through her stomach. Her liver was severely injured.Ayala has a criminal record, including being sentenced in a murder case more than 20 years ago.
