There is a rush of emotions even typing those words, but it’s hard to describe.
“Shock” isn’t quite it, because none of this is surprising; “disappointment” implies the expectation of a better outcome; “horror” and “outrage” are both words that have been overworked and spread so thin over the last few years—is an outrageous horror—and anyway, both fail to account for the numbness millions of Americans feel after years of political and social turmoil where every day seems to bring some new crime or dysfunction or bigotry to light.
