Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch says he is ramping up crime fighting efforts in Prichard again afterthis past weekend. Burch says they're aggressively going after known shooters and the public can expect more police chases. He didn't mince words about the consequences of running from the law.
"If you run from us with a vehicle, we're going to catch you. If that includes wrecking you out, we will do that to protect the safety of the public. If you run from us on foot, we're going to deploy our canines and you're going to get bit, and if you decide to pull a gun, all I can say is I strongly recommend you not do that. If they pull a gun that's deadly force and we will reply with deadly force, if necessary," said Burch.
Burch says on Monday they began increasing law enforcement presence in Prichard. He says they're working with the Prichard Police Department, Mobile Police Department and also brought in state troopers for traffic enforcement."As with any operation like this, we're dealing with a lot of gang members or violent offenders who are known shooters. And so we expect that there's going to be some car chases. We've had about six in the last two days.
Burch says people in the community will see a noticeable increase in police presence, and he cautions drivers to be mindful that you could get caught up in a police pursuit. Burch says there's an important purpose behind this operation. "I've seen more young criminals with guns in the last six months than I've seen my entire career. Pretty much every stop we get, they have guns," said Burch. "I'm tired of violence in Mobile and we, in collaboration with the other agencies are ramping things up, and we're going to do something about it."
