Texas taxpayers are on the hook for $45,000 in legal defense for Attorney General Ken Paxton as he attempts to ward off multiple complaints to the State Bar over his failed lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Texas taxpayers are on the hook for $45,000 so far in legal defense for Attorney General Ken Paxton as he attempts to ward off multiple complaints to the State Bar over his failed lawsuit seeking to overturn the 2020 presidential election at the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Lawyers Defending American Democracy complaint is moving forward and will be heard by either a district court judge or an administrative panel, the complainants say. for work related to the bar complaints. Chris Gober, a GOP election lawyer known for his work defending the state’s political maps, had the highest rate at $525 an hour.
Paxton has been in this position before: In 2015, after the Supreme Court made its landmark Obergefell v. Hodges decision legalizing same-sex marriage, he faced a State Bar complaint for issuing a legal opinion that said Texas county clerks, charged with officiating over weddings, could refuse to do so for gay couples, if the clerk had religious objections to them.
Steve Fischer, elected State Bar director for the Western District of Texas and one of the attorneys who filed the 2015 complaint, said Paxton’s remedy is that he would recoup legal fees if a complaint eventually went to district court and he won. In the meantime, taxpayers shouldn’t have to bear the cost, he said.
