Ahsoka has a similar subplot to Poe Dameron's storyline in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but the show has a far more competent version of it.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT A familiar plot point from Star Wars: The Last Jedi is handled far more competently in Ahsoka. The Last Jedi is easily the most divisive entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, with many viewers taking issue with the film’s characterization of returning original trilogy-era characters, its understanding of the Force and various Force-using factions, and repeated imitations of scenes and arcs from previous Star Wars films .
Early on in The Last Jedi, Poe Dameron leads an attack against a First Order Dreadnought, but is ordered to return to the Resistance flagship by General Leia Organa once the Resistance Base on D’Qar is fully evacuated. Poe disobeys the order and leads his squadron into battle, resulting in heavy Resistance casualties, despite the Dreadnaught’s destruction. Poe is demoted for his actions, and while the film itself frames him as being wrong, his subplot later vindicates his disobedience.
Hera & Poe's Subplots Follow Exactly The Same Arc In Ahsoka, Hera Syndulla similarly leads an unsanctioned mission to Seatos, hoping to not only find Ezra Bridger, but also prevent the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Hera brings a small squadron of X-wings with, her but when the Eye of Sion launches into an extragalactic hyperspace jump, two X-wings are destroyed and their respective pilots and astromech droids are killed.
While The Last Jedi sides against Poe, Ahsoka is firmly on Hera’s side, framing her actions as necessary and repeatedly proving them as such. Thrawn is alive and plotting to return to the main Star Wars galaxy, as is Ezra Bridger, whose Force-sensitivity and experience battling Thrawn will make him an invaluable ally to the New Republic. The Last Jedi may frame Poe’s actions as reckless, but the film proves that they ultimately saved the Resistance shortly after his demotion.
Why Hera's Story Works Poe Dameron justifies his disobedient attack on the First Order Dreadnaught by noting that it is a “fleet-killer.” Indeed, the vessel easily obliterated the Resistance Base on D’Qar and nearly did the same to the Resistance flagship, the Raddus - with Leia onboard.
