A manipulated video mimicking Vice President Kamala Harris’s voice has raised significant concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence as the U.S. presidential election approaches.
With Election Day approaching in about three months, the video’s release and rapid spread highlight the pressing need for better rules on AI-generated content.shared it on his social media platform, X, on Friday evening. Musk’s post, which has been viewed over 123 million times, called the video “amazing” with a laughing emoji but didn’t mention it was a parody. This has increased worries about AI’s ability to mislead people.
The fake voice in the video makes false claims, saying Harris is a “diversity hire” and doesn’t know how to run the country. Although the video keeps the “Harris for President” branding and uses real clips of her, its goal is clearly to mislead viewers., asserting, “We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump.
Rob Weissman, co-president of Public Citizen, expressed concerns that many people would be deceived by the video.
