A San Antonio International Airport employee died after being sucked into a Delta Air Lines plane engine on Friday.
The plane had just finished a flight from Los Angeles and was taxiing at the time of the incident. Ground handling operations company Unifi Aviation was the anonymous worker's employer and reported the death was “unrelated to Unifi’s operational processes, safety procedures and policies” in a statement issued on Saturday.
The airport also confirmed that an investigation is ongoing. In a statement, the airport said:"We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation." A source cited by the Guardian on the condition of anonymity claimed the employee “intentionally stepped in front of the live engine.”Delta Air Lines issued a statement of its own on Sunday to express,"Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time."
San Antonio International Airport was named Airport of the Year in 2022 by the Airport Minority Advisory Council, as it hired and promoted over 100 employees in 2021, a majority of whom are minorities.
