Akron fire officials allowed workers to return to the John F. Seiberling Federal Building on Wednesday after a suspicious substance was found to be harmless and a bomb threat not credible.

During a press conference, Joseph Natko, the city’s fire chief, said the department was dispatched to the building, 2 S. Main St., at 9:44 a.m., after a woman working in the mailroom found a suspicious white substance inside an envelope.

Natko said the suspicious substance was determined to be harmless. After investigating the building, the bomb threat was determined not credible. He could not confirm who the envelope was addressed to. Earlier in the day, buildings in the area had been evacuated as officials searched inside the building that houses the U.S. District Court and several federal offices.

Natko said through his year of service, he has not experienced an incident involving both a suspicious substance and a bomb threat.
