The median life expectancy for female capybaras is 8.6 years, according to the zoo. Atlantis died at age 10.
The zoo made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize Atlantis on Saturday due to “age related conditions.” Atlantis’ care team had noticed a steep decline in her health, and an exam showed several abnormalities, according to the zoo.
“We are heartbroken at the loss of Atlantis. She will be missed by all the staff at the Akron Zoo, along with her many fans,” said Akron Zoo Career Pathways Manager Shelley Orloski in a news release.
