The gibbon’s name is Lolani, which means “royal hawk, soaring to new heights” in Lao.

A lesser ape species, white-cheeked gibbons are native to Southeast Asia. The species is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List due to habitat loss, mainly from deforestation to create palm oil plantations. The native population has decreased by approximately 80 percent in the last 45 years, according to the zoo.

An accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the Akron Zoo takes part in the Gibbon Species Survival Plan, a breeding program that aims to ensure a healthy, genetically diverse population of white-cheeked gibbons.Winter hours are 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $9 per person and children under 2 are free.
