There is a significant risk for severe weather in parts of Alabama later today. alwx
Severe weather will be possible today and tonight across much of Alabama. A not-often-used Level 4 risk has been extended into southwest Alabama. The areas in orange have a Level 3 risk; the areas in yellow have a Level 2 risk and the areas in dark green have a Level 1 risk. Wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail, flooding and tornadoes will all be possible through the overnight hours tonight. Make sure you have reliable ways to get severe weather warnings today.
The rest of Alabama faces the prospect of strong storms as well. There will be an enhanced risk for part of west Alabama, and the rest of the state could see scattered to isolated storms. A moderate risk means that widespread severe storms are “likely,” and is a risk category used sparingly.Today’s storms could arrive in two forms. Storms are expected to form into a squall line or messier storm complex and move into Alabama later today from the west. Both the main line and the supercells will have the potential to spawn tornadoes. It will be windy today even before the storms arrive, and wind advisories are in place for nearly all of the state today.
