Several challenges to primary election results will be heard by a 21-member candidate committee of the Alabama Republican Party. alpolitics

Election contests were filed for Alabama House District 28 in Etowah County and District 29 in Etowah and Calhoun counties. Candidates have filed contests to the election results in five Alabama legislative races in last week’s Republican primary.

A challenge was also filed in District 29, where Etowah County Commissioner Jamie Grant of Reece City trailed Mark Gidley by 82 votes before provisional ballots were counted. Grant had said Wednesday he intended to file a challenge. to their districts after the Legislature approved a new district plan last year. That led to some people voting in the wrong House district. Officials have not said how many voters were affected.In District 1, Rep. Phillip Pettus of Killen led Maurice McCaney by 360 votes according to unofficial results before provisional ballots were counted.

Election contests are heard by the 21-member candidate committee of the state Republican Party. State Party Chair John Wahl, who also chairs the candidate committee, said Wednesday the committee meeting to hear the challenges had not yet been scheduled.
