Issues at the solar farm included excess silt pollution from the solar field construction sites and polluted stormwater runoff into local waterways. This kind of pollution from any type of construction project can impact waterways and wildlife.
The owners of one of Alabama’s largest solar projects have agreed to pay $500,000 to resolve alleged violations of the Clean Water Act that occurred during the construction of a 1,100-acre solar farm in Chambers County, near LaFayette.
“While the development of renewable energy holds great promise for combatting climate change, the solar energy industry must comply with the Clean Water Act,” U.S. Assistant Attorney General Todd Kim said in a news release. According to the consent decree with AL Solar A, the violations involved discharges of sediment-laden stormwater into Kellem Hill Creek, which joins other creeks to flow into the Chattahoochee River near the Alabama-Georgia state line.
