JUST IN: Alabama unemployment rate drops to new historic low of 2.2%

The April rate represents 51,462 unemployed Alabamians, which is also a new record low. The April figure is down from 53,017 in March and 57,712 a year earlier when the unemployment rate was 2.5%. The state has hit a new record of 2,293,022 people in the workforce. Most gains came in the leisure and hospitality sector , the financial activities sector and the private education and health services sector, according to state data.
