We chat with RareObjects stars Alan Cumming & Derek Luke about their respect for Katie Holmes' evolution as a filmmaker, and the themes of mental health in their new film:
Rare Objects tells the story of a young woman named Benita . She has had a traumatic past and works to rebuild her life by working at a New York City antique shop, where she meets Peter and Winshaw . She is also reunited with someone from her recent past, Diana .
Screen Rant sat down with Alan Cumming and Derek Luke to discuss working with the talented Katie Holmes, who writes, directs, and stars in this film. They also shared the importance of openly talking about mental health in Rare Objects, and what each actor hopes viewers who are struggling take away from it.
Derek Luke: It has layers. First, there's Katie and her full development. I knew her in that single lane: an actress. And now she's a director and a writer. When we first worked together, we did a Peter Hedges film, and one of the brands of Peter's that I [see being] added to Katie is that I feel he writes beautifully. I think Katie has this beauty that she's adding to the film.
Alan Cumming: I'm so impressed by her, not just in her work but in her life; how she's conducted ourselves and how open and vulnerable she is and yet strong as well. And she doesn't shirk away from discussing things that have happened to her that have contributed to who she is today. Derek Luke: It's interesting because mental health, depending on what community or culture you're from, can be defined differently. I think where we all meet in the shop? That, for me, represents life. And life is saying, "Listen, we all have fractures, and we're all rare. We need to become more familiar with each other." Julia is [closer to] where I grew up, and you may have grew up and more of a influential [place], but one thing that we shares the humanity.
