Alaska Smokejumpers are preparing for the upcoming fire season with practice jumps between March 25 and May 24.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On Monday, March 25, Alaska Smokejumpers took their first leap from the skies for 2024, in preparation for the upcoming fire season.

While ground work began one week ago, smokejumper instructors had their first jump on Monday. As they prepare for not only the fires that await them, they will need to undergo their own refreshers and training. While the amount of refresher jumps for the instructors may be limited, “they’re all going to get rated and critiqued and stuff like that, there’s thing that everybody can work on,” Krohe said. Before the other smokejumpers arrive, the instructors will also go through procedures and the gear that they’ll be using. That includes line gear, their parachutes and small materials such as food and water. “It’s bare minimum for us, for everything that we need,” Krohe explained.
